A structuralist approach in the study of evolution and classification Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A survey is given of structuralism as a method that can be applied in the study of evolution and classification. The results of a structuralist approach are illustrated by examples from the laws underlying numerical changes, from the laws underlying changes in the chelicerate life-cycle, and from the laws underlying the evolution of the chelicerate appendages. Suggestions are given for the study of the laws underlying the transformation of form, and some notes are made on structuring forces and the early stages of organic evolution. Some concluding remarks are finally made on deep structure, phylogenetic classification and evolution.

Acarological and arachnological notes Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A study is made of four subjects in the fields of chelicerate morphology, postembryonic development and relationships, viz., the functional morphology of the legs in Anystis (a fastrunning Actinotrichid mite), the musculature of the gnathosoma of Glyptholaspis confusa (Foà) (an Anactinotrichid mite), the evolution of the chelicerate life-cycle in the case of an irregular number of instars, and the relationships of the chelicerate classes and subclasses.

Comparative studies in Chelicerata : I. The Cryptognomae (Ricinulei, Architarbi and Anactinotrichida) Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of three groups of Chelicerata: Ricinulei, Architarbi and Anactinotrichid mites. Ricinulid terminology is revised, and a partly new interpretation of Ricinulid structure is given. Models are prepared of the evolution of Cryptognomic characters. Classification of the three groups is based on a cladistic analysis.

Comparative studies in Chelicerata III. Opilionida Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of the three groups (Cyphophthalmi, Laniatores and Palpatores) into which Opilionida are currently subdivided. Methods, principles and terminology, adopted in this paper, correspond with those of parts I and II of the present series of studies in Chelicerata. Special attention is paid to mouthparts and appendages, to opilionid relationships, and to the evolution of chelicerate characters. It is demonstrated that Cyphophthalmi present all the essential opilionid characters, and evidently do not constitute a separate group. It is also demonstrated that Opilionida are not closely related to Actinotrichid or Anactinotrichid mites, but to other groups with a so-called myliosoma (mouthparts associated with coxisternal feeding); these...

Comparative studies in Chelicerata IV. Apatellata, Arachnida, Scorpionida, Xiphosura Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of four chelicerate classes: Apatellata (Solifugae and Pseudoscorpionida), Arachnida s. str. (both groups of Uropygi, i.e. Holopeltida and Schizomida, Amblypygi and Araneida), Scorpionida and Xiphosura. Methods, principles and terminology, adopted in this paper, correspond with those of parts I -111 of the present series of comparative studies in Chelicerata. Special attention is paid to segmentation of the body, respiratory organs, orifices of coxal glands, mouthparts, and appendages. The evolution of these structures is studied, and the relationships of the chelicerate classes and subclasses are reinvestigated and discussed.

Scorpion fauna of the island of Fernando de Noronha, Brazil: first record of Tityus stigmurus (Thorell 1877) (Arachnida, Buthidae) Biota Neotropica
Freitas,Gilson Carlos Conceição; Vasconcelos,Simão Dias.
A survey of the scorpion fauna of the Island of Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco (Brazil), was carried out in October 2005. Methods included active collecting and pitfall traps in several areas of the island under different degrees of human-caused alteration. Forty four scorpions, belonging to two species were collected: Isometrus maculatus (DeGeer, 1778), previously listed for the Island, and Tityus stigmurus (Thorell, 1877), here recorded for the first time. This species was probably introduced via cargo shipments from the continent and offers risk to the local population due to the gravity of the accidents.
